Epsom Salts

Epsom Salt for Home Gardens

By Daniel McCall

Many people are familiar with the benefits of Epsom salt for human ailments; however, it is quite beneficial to plant life as well. Gardens that are treated with this nutrient will produce larger vegetables in increased yields, and bigger, longer lasting blooms on flowers.

A few pounds of Epsom salt make a powerful supplement to garden soil. The two main components of this salt, magnesium and sulfur, are not found in most fertilizers and are quickly leeched from the soil during rainfall. Magnesium promotes a large root system which aids in the absorption of nutrients, and sulfur increases the uptake of nitrogen. Applying this versatile salt concurrently with fertilizer will produce dramatic results. Plants will attain a lush, dark green color that will be the envy of the neighborhood.

Epsom salt is the perfect antidote to the yellowing or dropping leaves that often occur following the transplanting of tomatoes and peppers. A study by the National Gardening Association found that applying Epsom salt to pepper plants resulted in healthier plants that produced larger fruits. In the same study, testers were also asked to apply Epsom salt to their rosebushes. The participants reported that the treated roses outperformed a control group by developing "greener foliage, bushier plants and more roses".

Other plants in your yard will benefit as well. Bulbs will improve in size and produce an abundance of flowers. Azaleas will bloom prolifically, palms will resist yellowing, and evergreens will develop increased drought resistance. Even potted plants will get a boost from the addition of this wonderful supplement.

Epsom salt can be applied dry or dissolved in water. A solution sprayed onto plant leaves will be quickly absorbed. Since it is non-toxic, has no odor, and leaves no residue, it is safe for use in areas frequented by pets or children.

Epsom salt can be purchased at any drug store or garden center for only pennies per pound, making it one of the most economical ways to see impressive results in your garden.
