Spotlight: Chasteberry

(Vitex Agnus Castus)
Also known as Chaste Tree or Monk’s Pepper

This shrub-like tree has been cultivated for five centuries, but is still unknown to many modern gardeners. Originally from the Mediterranean, it spread into Europe by the 16sup>th century. Its spread was aided by European Monks who believed that consuming the tree’s leaves and berries helped them keep their vows of chastity. While this may seem a little odd, modern herbalists have conducted studies that show consuming this plant’s berries does affect levels of testosterone and estrogen in humans. In fact, Vitex is still sold as a remedy for a variety of hormonal and menopausal conditions.

Aside from its medical properties, this plant makes a lovely addition to a landscape. In warm climate it can grow to 15 feet tall and wide. However, in cooler climate it is usually much smaller reaching from 6 –10 feet. It can be pruned further to control growth. Sprays of purple flowers appear each fall, followed by small white berries. It also has a mild fragrance similar to a spicebush. This is a deciduous plant and will drop its leaves in winter.

This plant prefers full sun, and well-drained soil. It tolerates both drought and heavy rain, making care a breeze.
